Provincial Performance Team (PPT)

Cycling Nova Scotia is committed to the long-term development of athletes through structured training, purposeful competition, and values-based leadership. The Provincial Cycling Team, operating as the Provincial Performance Team (PPT), forms part of Cycling Nova Scotia’s High Performance Plan and aligns with the Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) model set out by Cycling Canada.

The Provincial Performance Team is designed to support committed, developing performance athletes who have identified cycling as their primary sport and who demonstrate the potential, readiness, and desire to progress toward higher levels of competition. Athletes selected to the program work closely with an NCCP Competition Development–certified coach throughout the season.

The goal of the program is to prepare athletes for:

  • Provincial and national-level competition
  • Canada Games participation
  • Canada Cup competition
  • Consideration for National Team pathways, where appropriate

Athletes participating in the Provincial Performance Team are typically progressing through the Learn to Train and Train to Compete stages of the LTAD model.

Selection to the team is based on developmental readiness, performance potential, commitment to training, and alignment with program expectations. Performance results are considered within the context of age, discipline, and stage of long-term athlete development, rather than as the sole determining factor.

Athletes selected to the program are those who have made cycling their primary sport and who demonstrate the motivation and capacity to pursue long-term athletic excellence. The Provincial Performance Team is not intended to replace or substitute an athlete’s involvement with their local club, but rather to enhance development opportunities through coordinated coaching, performance support, and targeted provincial programming.

Development Team (Pathway Overview)

The Cycling Nova Scotia Development Team serves as a feeder pathway within the province’s Long-Term Athlete Development framework and supports athletes in the early stages of performance progression.

This program focuses on:

  • Skill acquisition and technical development
  • Introduction to structured training habits
  • Race experience and competition literacy
  • Building consistency, confidence, and long-term engagement

Athletes in the Development Team typically fall within the Learn to Train stage of the LTAD model. Those who demonstrate increased readiness, commitment, and alignment with performance expectations may be identified for progression toward the Provincial Performance Team.
