Year in Review Recap – Core AT Networks Project at Cycling Nova Scotia

Wow—what a year it’s been for the Core Active Transportation Networks Project at Cycling Nova Scotia! Over the past twelve months, we’ve been spinning our wheels in all the right ways, working hard to leverage new funding streams, and helping our community partners move confidently toward their AT goals. As we roll into a new year, we’re gearing up to push many of our partners across the finish line of their latest projects.

Wagmatcook First Nation:
Wagmatcook is cruising toward Class B detailed design drawings—just in time to make the most of upcoming federal grants for AT infrastructure. We’re thrilled to help them fine-tune their application and hopefully secure support for their proposed network in 2025. Keep your eyes on the horizon; Wagmatcook is on the move!

New Glasgow:
New Glasgow’s journey continues as well. We’ve lined up extra funding so they can shift a priority route into the detailed design stage and flesh out plans for their entire Core AT Network. With local council members already buzzing, we’re optimistic about a cost-sharing deal that will lead to a well-rounded, people-powered network.

Windsor (West Hants) and Westville:
Our other partner communities are pedaling into exciting second phases. Residents, stakeholders, and municipal staff in Windsor (West Hants) and Westville have been checking out new design options. We’re looking forward to spring when everyone’s feedback will help solidify these communities’ visions and boost their readiness to roll out even better AT networks.

Building Up Our Team of Experts:
This year, we made some great new friends on the consultant front! Harbourside Engineering, Upland |

planning + design studio, C + D Community Design, and WSP have all joined us on this adventure, each bringing valuable expertise. With their help, we’ve improved designs, nailed down more accurate cost estimates, engaged with communities more effectively, and packaged up stronger proposals for decision-makers.

Baddeck:
In the Village of Baddeck, momentum is picking up speed. We’ll soon bring fresh design concepts to the community—thanks to C + D Community Design—helping shape AT spaces that feel inviting, equitable, and true to Baddeck’s unique character.

Berwick and the Region of Queens:
Come spring, we’ll be shifting gears in Berwick to gather community input on design options and fine-tune those plans. Meanwhile, in the Region of Queens, we’ll keep the momentum going with three main Core AT Network projects in Liverpool, Caledonia, and Greenfield. We’re excited to see these communities ride toward a more connected and active future!

On the Road Ahead:
As we pedal into 2025/2026, we’re looking to partner with a few more forward-thinking communities. There’s still a tentative spot open—so if your town wants to develop, advance, and design a top-notch AT network, give us a shout!

A Toast to What’s Next:

From all of us at Cycling Nova Scotia, here’s to another year of turning big ideas into real-world AT solutions. We’re so grateful for the support, energy, and enthusiasm from all corners of the province. Keep those wheels turning, and may the new year bring plenty of fresh air, open trails, and smooth rides!
