Cycling NS gets many questions about insurance.  The below will help answer questions you may have about Cycling NS insurance. If you are looking for more specific details, click here: https://cyclingns.ca/insurance/

  • Why do I need insurance?

Cycling, although a beautiful sport, has inherent risks associated with it.  To ensure our members are covered in case of accident, our insurance is active anytime a member is on a bike anywhere in Canada.  This means commuting, group rides, races, Mountain Biking, Gravel Riding, going long distance solo or just puttering around the neighborhood.

If you are on your bike and you have an accident, you are covered (click here: https://cyclingns.ca/insurance/ for more details on coverage).  Reach out to our Executive Director ([email protected]) if you have an accident and he can help.

  • What does the insurance cover?

As a rider, the insurance covers bodily harm and injury. At this time, it does not cover bike damage.  You can read more detail in the AD&D section of the FAQ which gives you a full breakdown of the insurance coverage.  https://cyclingns.ca/insurance/

  • Why do I need to be a member to join a club?

To become a member of a club which is sanctioned by Cycling NS, you must be a member.  Why?  This is because the club is insured by Cycling NS and to protect the club and its board of directors, our CGL coverage states that all club members must be covered by Cycling NS.

Think of it this way.  The club is ensuring that they are covered if there is a legal dispute and to ensure this coverage is solid, people on club rides are required to be members (or have a One Event Membership). These community leaders are making it possible to have such great rides, it is only fair that they are covered from liability.

  • Why do I need to be a member to race or participate in an event?

For much the same reasons as clubs, it is crucial that their liability is limited so that they can continue to put on wonderful events that we all love.

To ensure our coverage is extended to them, participants must be members (or hold a OEM).  This is a small price to pay to make sure these leaders can continue to build the cycling culture in NS and ensure we all have a great time on our bikes..

Our goal is to offer reasonably priced, quality insurance so that we can have clubs, events and races to make cycling more fun and exciting in this province.  To ensure we can continue having these amazing events/races/club rides, making sure these organizers are appropriately covered is crucial.  To learn more click here: https://cyclingns.ca/event-and-race-insurance/

  • Why should my club join Cycling NS?

Are you riding with a club that is not insured?  If so, someone is taking a risk of legal responsibility if someone gets hurt.  As a sanctioned club with Cycling NS, this risk is diminished significantly.

If the club is not a Cycling NS club but has their own insurance, we are very supportive and will do all we can to make sure that they are successful and have great rides. If not, there may be liability issues if someone gets hurt. Cycling NS does our best to offer reasonable insurance to clubs. To join, click here: https://cyclingns.ca/join-bns-recreational-club/

  • Why should I have my event sanctioned by Cycling NS?

Event insurance can be expensive.  Cycling NS strives to ensure that we offer reasonable rates for events and races to run while covering the organizers from liability.  Check out our events and race insurance page for pricing:  https://cyclingns.ca/event-and-race-insurance/
