Cycling Nova Scotia and the Coal Town Trail Association, in partnership with the Nova Scotia Department of Public Works, and the Cape Breton Regional Municipality, is proud to share that a 34-kilometre section of the Blue Route Provincial Cycling Network between Glace Bay, Dominion, and Sydney opened on Saturday July 25th.
This new section of the Blue Route incorporates existing infrastructure, including the beautiful Coal Town Trail, Maryann Corbett Trail, along with on-road sections along Seaside Rd, Gardiner Rd, Wilson Road and Sydney Road. They are now connected and marked with a system of Blue Route wayfinding signage to highlight to locals and visitors that this is a safe and accessible cycling route.

As of today, October 19, the former Nova Scotia Motor Vehicle Act has been replaced with the new Traffic Safety Act (TSA). After being introduced nearly 100 years ago and having last had a major update in 1989, the former act was well overdue for full re-write to reflect changes in road use, and the growing number of vulnerable road users.
Cycling Nova Scotia has been actively working on reforming the Motor Vehicle Act since 2016, so are pleased to see that many changes have been made to support safer sharing of the road. We are very excited to announce that a new section of the Blue Route Provincial Cycling Network has been opened between Liverpool and Rissers Beach Provincial Park in the South Shore Region. In partnership with the Nova Scotia Department of Public Works Blue Route signage has been installed along this section.
The Blue Route Provincial Cycling Network (Blue Route) is a province-wide project to create a continuous cycling network. On April 30th, Cycling NS held a Special Meeting for Members to discuss the recent devastating Provincial Budget. With the loss of funding, combined with an almost doubling of insurance premiums since our last price increase (pre covid, over 6 years ago), we have come up with reasonable but necessary changes to the membership cost. These price changes were passed at the meeting and via email vote and include:
Removing Provincial Race Licenses (those who hold a Provincial Race License in 2026 already will not require any additional license)
Raising General Membership price to $75+tax and allowing any General Members to participate in any Cycling NS races, events and programs.
Family memberships will change to 15% off each additional member after the ...
Due to the recent Provincial budget cuts and it’s devastating effect on Cycling NS, the Board Of Directors has set a special meeting for the membership to discuss an increase in membership dues.
