Over the weekend, Bicycle Nova Scotia’s provincial team exceeded expectations at the National Cyclecross Championships held in Sherbrooke, Quebec. Cyclocross is considered one of the most difficult forms of cycle racing – where riders dismount and remount over obstacles, ride over varying terrain including grassy surfaces, mud and steep banks and is extremely popular in Europe, with growing popularity in North America.
Nine athletes from the province, including five members of the provincial cycling team, which was reestablished in 2016 after a 13 year gap – attended the races held on November 5 and 6th.

This month has been a difficult one for cyclists, particularly those in the Halifax Regional Municipality – but also for everyone in Nova Scotia who cares about access to safe and active transportation. The death of Loresa Makonin on October 8th, was exactly what BNS had hoped would not happen. Together with the Halifax Cycling Coalition, we hosted a memorial ride to celebrate her life, love of cycling, and to draw attention to the long road ahead to ensure that we do more to ensure that cyclists have safe infrastructure and that drivers know to watch for cyclists.

The Halifax Cycling Coalition and Bicycle Nova Scotia will be holding a memorial ride for Loresa Makonin on October 24, 2015 at 10:00am. Makonin was killed in a collision with a propane truck on October 7th, becoming the second person to be killed by riding a bicycle in the last two years.
The ride will celebrate Makonin's life and recreate part of her final bicycle ride. The event is also intended to express positive support for better bicycle infrastructure, policy and education in Halifax.

Between the end of April and early July this year, I was sent to Winnipeg, Manitoba on short notice for a career related course. Since I was going to be there for the majority of the 2015 MTB racing season, I brought my bike with me as I intended to participate in the various races and events within the province. I participated in a total of 7 races, 5 Manitoba Cup XCO style races, and 2 recreational XC races. My experience was very positive and I’m excited to share my experiences with as many Nova Scotia cyclists as possible. I’m very happy that I got involved, but I’m certainly happy to finally be home.

The sun was shining and it felt amazing to be riding the first segment of our provincial cycling network with a crowd of over fifty people.
