Bicycles Are Now Permitted in Nova Scotia’s Wilderness Areas

Over 100 km of off-road trail has been opened to bicycles in Nova Scotia’s Protected Wilderness Areas.  BNS has been working with the DEO, Protected Areas branch, to help push this designation through, opening 14 new and varied landscapes for off road cyclist. Nova Scotian Myatt takes GOLD!!

Nova Scotian Myatt takes GOLD at USA Cycling Collegiate Mountain Bike Nationals   19-year-old Nova Scotia cyclist, Mackenzie Myatt, just scored a GOLD medal at the 2017 USA Cycling Collegiate Mountain Bike Nationals.  Myatt was also a Silver medallist for Nova Scotia at the Canada Games this past summer, and a Silver medallist at the 2017 Canadian National Mountain Bike Championships. She has also travelled to Europe to compete for Team Canada.   Myatt is based out of Musquodoboit Harbour, Nova Scotia but also trains in Atlanta, Georgia where she studies writing in her 2nd year on a full athletic scholarship at the Savannah College of Art and Design.  She also writes a blog about her cycling adventures at ...

Sharing the road is a matter of life and death

This month has been a difficult one for cyclists, particularly those in the Halifax Regional Municipality – but also for everyone in Nova Scotia who cares about access to safe and active transportation. The death of Loresa Makonin on October 8th, was exactly what BNS had hoped would not happen. Together with the Halifax Cycling Coalition, we hosted a memorial ride to celebrate her life, love of cycling, and to draw attention to the long road ahead to ensure that we do more to ensure that cyclists have safe infrastructure and that drivers know to watch for cyclists. Blue Route is launched!

BNS want to send out a BIG thank you to everyone who joined in celebrating the Blue Route launch last Thursday in the Town of Pictou. The sun was shining and it felt amazing to be riding the first segment of our provincial cycling network with a crowd of over fifty people. Special thanks as well to guest speakers Minister Geoff MacLellan and Mayor Joe Hawes, and to the Town of Pictou, the Municipality of Pictou County and the Pictou County Trails Association for helping make the event such a success.
